What Does CHAFA Do?
Clay High Alumni & Friends Association sponsors two events each year. The Chopper Dropper is held at the CHS Memorial Stadium on the Ted Federici field. The event entails the purchase of numbered golf balls which are taken up in a helicopter and dropped over the football field. The winning ball, closest to the center flag, wins $1000! This event is held on Homecoming and has continued to provide $1000 scholarships to thirty-three graduates since 1998. This event also helps maintain any additional costs involved with the publishing of the twice-yearly newsletter.
Our second event is the all class reunion, appropriately named Groove in the Grove since it's held at Oak Shade Grove, in Oregon. This event lets alumni and friends enjoy a great time dancing and reminiscing. Not only does this function provide a place to meet old friends and make new ones, it is also a great place to hold YOUR class reunion. CHAFA takes care of the place, food, drinks and music. All you need to do is invite your former classmates!
Although the Groove is not a money making event, any additional profit is put back into CHAFA to use towards assisting individual organizations at Clay High School. So far we have purchased two display cases for trophies and awards at the high school. Additional donations have been given to the Crystal, The Eagle, Operation Graduation, Limelighters, the Korean and Vietnam Memorials at Clay, Cheerleaders, Athletic Boosters, Jazz Band, Academic Boosters as well as the care and keeping of the CHS Mascots. Donations have also been contributed to the Hank Spring Memorial Gymnasium.
CHAFA is also the organization that has recognized the superb accomplishments and contributions of Clay graduates and friends of Clay High School by way of the CHAFA Hall of Fame. Each year CHAFA accepts nominations and voting is held to select new inductees into the Hall of Fame.
Also we have an Oregon Fest parade entry featuring Eddy and Edna Eagle riding proudly in a Corvette.
CHAFA holds bi-monthly meetings at Clay. All are invited to join the committee and new ideas are always welcome. Become involved a lot or a little. You may contact Tammy Hughes Swartz, CHAFA President, at 419.693.0665, ext. 2044 with any questions, concerns, and meeting dates.
